My cat Seth was from an abandoned litter and in poor health and he was barely three weeks old when I brought him home. Booker, my brother's Rottweiler, was around a year old at the time. Shortly after we introduced them, we noticed a special bond developing. Booker was infatuated with the new addition and she groomed him constantly, followed him everywhere and she was extremely protective.
As time passed both Booker and Seth had gained substantial weight... as it turns out for completely different reasons. Seth managed to supplement his calorie intake, hence the substantial weight gain and Booker wasn't exactly "fattening up for the winter." She had in fact been producing milk and providing late night feeding sessions for the industrious little fur ball!
Booker has since weaned and distanced herself from Seth, so he can be more independent. But if we say, "Booker where's your Baby?" she'll jump up and search for Seth. They still share special moments together, but usually when no one is looking, like it's a big secret.

Coloring - American Wirehairs are medium-sized cats and come in many different colors and patterns.
Eyes - Deep blue, brilliant gold, odd-eyed, greeen, blue-green or hazel. Brilliant gold is the most common, although eye color relates to coat color.
Overall Appearance - The American Wirehair is a spontaneous mutation. The coat, which is springy, dense, and resilient, but also coarse and hard to the touch, distinguishes the American Wirehair from all other breeds.

Breed Fact - The American Wirehair breed is uniquely American. It began as a spontaneous mutation in a litter of upstate New York farm cats in 1966. A spontaneous mutation is an uncommon, although not rare, happening which occurs when two ordinary cats come together and as a result of their mating, a kitten unlike its parents or littermates is born.

The American Wirehair is distinguished by its coat - as the result of natural mutation, every hair is crimped and springy, including the whiskers. This mutation first made itself known in a litter of kittens born in 1966 in upstate New York; twelve years later, in 1978, it was accepted for championship status by CFA.

There is considerable variation in the degree of "wiring" to the hair; if the hair is too long or too soft, it may straighten or form waves and ringlets with age. The ideal American Wirehair coat is hard and springy.

Natural athletes, the American Wirehair is a strong, muscular cat that likes active play as well as affection and quiet time.

The original mutation occurred in a domestic shorthair, and the American Shorthair has also contributed to the development of the breed. Wirehairs are found in a variety of colors and patterns.
